Drawing Classes in NYC

Beginner and Intermediate Drawing

Working from simple still life setups students will learn the fundamentals of drawing. Step-by-by-step instruction in building the form through line and value will be given. Individual critiques covering the basics of drawing such as proportions, value, construction and perspective will be offered. No experience necessary.

Portrait and Figure Drawing. Focus on Artistic Anatomy. Russian Academic Approach.

This class is for students with experience in drawing. Students will focus on understanding the human form by analyzing the structure, anatomy, proportions and the body's movement. Instructor will teach by giving individual critiques and by doing class demonstrations.

Taught by Ilya Mirochnik, honors MFA graduate of the Repin Academy and first place winner of the American Portrait Society Competition.

Painting Classes in NYC

Oil or Watercolor Painting. From Still Life to Portrait to Figure. All Levels.

By working from life, students will master both technical and conceptual aspects of painting. Color theory and color mixing will be discussed. The goal is to teach students to create a realistic image through mastering color and tonal relationships. Beginner students work from still life while more advanced might work from still life and live models. No prior painting experience necessary but prior drawing exeprience is recommended before taking this class or in conjunction with it.

College Portfolio/Art for High School Students. Drawing and Painting from Observation. From Still LIfe to the Human Form (Portrait, Self-Portrait, Figure). Developing your own unique style.

Minimum age 13.

During this 12 weeks course which should be continued by a student through more than one semester, students will obtain a deper understanding of visual arts.

This class is ideal for HS students or adults who want to develop a high quality scholarship-earning portfolio.

The Saturday class will focus more on drawing. Beginner students will work from still life setups whereas advanced students will work from live models (portrait, self-portrait and figure). Media may include pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, watercolor. Each class will include a short art history lecture. Please note, that semi-nude models are used in this class.

The Sunday class will focus on painting techniques in oils, watercolors or other media of your choice. Students will work from still life, and eventually progress to the human form (portrait, self-portrait, figure).

Time permitting, visits to studios of practicing artists and field trips to Museums and galleries will also be arranged in addition to working in class.

As an additional benefit for students, Bridgeview invites college admissions councilors who talk about their colleges and also review students' portfolios.

Watercolor Painting

This class for all levels of students who are interested in learning special techniques of watercolor painting. Students will work from observation. Subjects may include still life and possibly portrait or figure.

Landscape painting on location. Paint New York.

Plein aire painting class will meet on location. Variety of inspiring locations will be explored including New York Central Park, waterfronts and etc. New York scenery has inspired many artists of the past including Child Hassam and William Meritt Chase, to just name a few. Guided by an experienced master artist students will pick a subject and record their feelings through form and color. Aspects of composition, color mixing, perspective and scale will be discussed.

Students may choose their own materials such as watercolor, pastels, oils or pencils.

Class size is limited to 12 students. We teach the time-tested classical techniques of the Russian Academy, one of the oldest and most respected art academies in the world.

Withdrawal Policy. Students are allowed to withdraw before the the semester begins, in which case tuition is reimbursed in minus a $50 cancellation fee. Once the semeter begins, there are no withdrawals allowed.

Tuition payment. Tution is due in full before the beginning of class. A payment plan of 2 monthly payments may be arranged provided payments are secured with a major credit card.

Missed classes. Students can not transfer any tuition for missed classes to another semester or receive refund for missed classes. However, provided that space is available in another class, they can use it as a make-up for a missed class during the same term that they are registered for.

For example, if you are registered in a Monday evening class and miss it, you can arrange for a makeup by going to a Thursday or Tuesday or Saturday class provided that the other class is not completely full. Since we work with students on an individual basis, another teacher can give you a different assignment that is appropriate to you specifically regardless of what the rest of the class might be working on. Such makeups have to be arranged by email with the school's administration.

Storage. Painting students can store their materials and work in progress at the school.
